Falls on West Branch of Sacandaga River and Cold Brook Falls

Wells, NY 12180

Overview

Hike 2.5 miles one way to West Branch Gorge - this should only be done in the middle of the summer when the water levels are low. The falls go through a narrow gorge of the West Branch of the Sacandaga River.

Directions: Turn off Route 30 south of Wells and take Algonquin Road past the dam for 0.7 miles to West River Road. Continue on for about 8 miles on West River Road to a large clearing where the road will end. The trail starts in the woods and is parallel to the river for most of the way.

From the trailhead, hike about half a mile where the path takes a left. Follow the path and cross Hamilton Lake Stream (this will be difficult in high water). Cross Cold Brook at 1.8 miles, where you'll see the falls upstream. Follow the river on the north bank until you see the first waterfalls which will be about 10 to 12 feet. The second, smaller falls is located a few hundred yards up from the river and might be difficult to see.
