Hanging Spear Falls is a 75-foot high, hourglass-shaped falls on the Opalescent River near Calamity Mountain.
Take Exit 29 from I-87, and continue west for 17 miles on the Blue Ridge Road (CR 84), then turn right toward Tahawus (CR 25).
Continue north on CR 25 until it becomes a dirt road, which will lead you to a parking area.
From the parking area, choose either a shorter, 6-mile hike on the Calamity Brook Trail or a longer, 7-mile hike that involves a climb up to the falls. Hikers should note that the routes can be very steep and dangerous, and should not be attempted by beginners.
