The Town of Tupper Lake, in Franklin County New York, has a logging and manufacturing history that once thrived as a bustling town booming with business. Visitors from afar walked the busy streets of this Town in search of hunting expeditions, wildlife viewing, business transactions and acquiring their own piece of land in the heart of Adirondacks.

Today, several summer camps and private parks are owned by nonresidents such as: Martin Sheppey, William L. Ketcham, Edward H. Litchfield and the very prestigious Kildare Club which owns about 17,000 acres of forest in the western part of the Town. The merge of different social classes influenced the Town’s demographic with differing elements and cultural extractions represented today.

As the year’s progress and many towns have found their niche to sustain economy and refurbish their town, Tupper Lake struggles to sustain a growing economy in an economically depressed area. By no fault of the Town, or of its residents, they continue to strive to restore the economic boom that once brought economy and tourism to their Town.

Recently, the Adirondack Park Agency has approved a project called “Adirondack Club and Resort.” The former Big Tupper Ski Area will be developed to include great camp lots, revitalizing existing ski slopes and ridgeline development. Some concerns about this project focused on wetland damage and residential development influencing the Raquette River Recreational River area.

While I have concerns about such a large project development, I hope more visitors begin to stop and explore to what Tupper Lake has to offer. Its beautiful views, recreational areas, downtown shops and generous locals are worth the time to discover.
