What Is IRONMAN?
IRONMAN is one of the most prestigious and physically demanding endurance races in the world. It challenges athletes with a full-distance triathlon: a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride, and a 26.2-mile run — all completed in a single day.
Since its start in 1978, the IRONMAN brand has grown into a global phenomenon with races in over 55 countries. Beyond the physical test, IRONMAN represents the spirit of perseverance, resilience, and the idea that Anything Is Possible®.
Lake Placid stands among the most iconic IRONMAN locations in the U.S., second only to Kona’s IRONMAN World Championship in terms of history and prestige. The town’s Olympic legacy and natural beauty make it a dream course for athletes around the world.
The Challenge of a Lifetime: Inside IRONMAN Lake Placid

Founded in 1999, IRONMAN Lake Placid has earned a reputation as one of the most exciting and rewarding events in the global triathlon calendar. Athletes face 140.6 miles of endurance racing across some of the most stunning terrain in the northeast.
The Swim: 2.4 Miles in Mirror Lake
The ROKA Swim Course is a two-loop swim in the calm, clear waters of Mirror Lake, right in the center of town. Known for its consistent conditions and excellent sightlines, this swim is considered one of the best in the IRONMAN series. Buoys are few, making for a smooth, guided swim—ideal for both first-timers and veterans.
Spectator support lines the route from the water to Transition 1, giving athletes a huge boost as they begin the next leg of the race.
The Bike: 112 Miles Through the Adirondacks
The ZOOT Bike Course features two loops filled with elevation changes, sweeping descents, and panoramic views. Honored as the Best Bike Course Globally by the 2023 Athlete Choice Awards, it’s both technically challenging and visually rewarding. Riders pedal past lakes, climb through the mountains, and experience the vast beauty of the Adirondack region.
Transition 2 is well-organized and efficiently managed, with plenty of support and a dedicated bike-catching team.
The Run: 26.2 Miles Through Lake Placid
Voted the second-best run course in North America, the HOKA Run Course takes athletes through the lively streets of Lake Placid’s downtown and into quiet, rolling terrain. The two-loop design allows for frequent crowd support—especially on Mill Hill, a high-energy stretch known for its enthusiastic spectators.
As racers near the finish, they return to Mirror Lake and close out their journey at the Olympic Oval, cheered on by friends, family, and fellow competitors.
