Visit New York's North Pole: Meet Santa, Go Fishing & More
North Pole, New York is located on the side of Whiteface Mountain near the beautiful AuSable River in the Lake Placid Region of the Adirondack Mountains. This area has some of the most spectacular scenery in the country with the mountains providing a dramatic backdrop to the peaceful waters of the AuSable River.
There are many ways to enjoy the natural beauty of the area throughout the year. In winter, skiing and snowboarding are available at the nearby Olympic complex on Whiteface Mountain, the site of the 1980 Winter Olympics. The complex has 86 trails with skiing for all levels. Snowmobiling, cross country skiing and snowshoeing are also popular in North Pole.
In the warmer months, there are a variety of outdoor activities available. There are hiking and biking trails on Whiteface Mountain. Several of the campgrounds and resorts have trails which lead to the Whiteface Mountain trails. There is also a 5-mile trail on Mount Esther which provides wonderful views of Whiteface Mountain. You could also take in the views from a gondola ride up Whiteface.
Boating is a popular outdoor activity on the AuSable River. Rowboats, paddle boats, kayaks and canoes are available for rent. Fishing is another way to enjoy the river, which is known for its abundant supply of trout.
Other than the outdoor activities, the main attraction of North Pole is Santa's Workshop. Opened in 1949, this attraction is an alpine-style village near Whiteface Mountain.
It features Christmas shows, a steam train, a gift shop, a post office and rides. Children can visit with Santa and interact with live reindeer. Santa's Workshop is open in the summer and during select weekends from September through December.
Many lodging options are available in North Pole, including several campgrounds, some of which have hiking trails, swimming pools and game rooms. There are two resort areas that also have swimming pools, gift shops and mini golf.
North Pole is a wonderful destination for those seeking to enjoy the natural beauty of the Adirondack Mountains as well as those looking for family fun. The array of available activities will keep every member of the family entertained.
